Background of the Study
Traditional chieftaincy institutions have historically played a crucial role in governance, conflict resolution, and cultural preservation in Nigerian societies. In Benin City, these institutions are witnessing a decline influenced by modern political structures, urbanization, and evolving social norms (Igbinedion, 2023). As contemporary governance systems gain prominence, the authority and influence of traditional chiefs are increasingly questioned. This shift is compounded by economic changes and generational differences that favor modern administrative practices over customary leadership (Osagie, 2024). The erosion of traditional chieftaincy undermines cultural identity and disrupts community cohesion. Recent studies have highlighted the need to re-examine the relevance and adaptation of chieftaincy systems in a modern context (Udo, 2025). This study investigates the factors contributing to the decline of traditional chieftaincy in Oredo, seeking to document the challenges and propose strategies for preserving this cultural institution.

Statement of the Problem
Traditional chieftaincy institutions in Benin City are declining due to modern political, social, and economic pressures (Igbinedion, 2023). The diminished influence of traditional leaders has led to a loss of cultural identity and weakened community governance (Osagie, 2024). Despite their historical importance, there is limited research on the specific factors accelerating this decline. This study aims to investigate the causes of the erosion of chieftaincy institutions and to propose measures that might revitalize traditional leadership roles (Udo, 2025). Addressing this issue is essential for preserving cultural heritage and sustaining community unity.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To identify factors contributing to the decline of chieftaincy institutions.
  • To assess the impact of modern governance on traditional leadership.
  • To recommend strategies for revitalizing chieftaincy roles.

Research Questions:

  • What factors are driving the decline of traditional chieftaincy in Benin City?
  • How has modern political structure affected traditional leadership?
  • What measures can sustain and revive chieftaincy institutions?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Modern governance structures significantly reduce the influence of traditional chieftaincy.
  • H2: Urbanization negatively impacts traditional leadership roles.
  • H3: Community-based initiatives can help revive chieftaincy institutions.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the decline of traditional chieftaincy institutions in Benin City. The findings will inform cultural preservation policies and help community leaders understand the challenges facing traditional governance. By offering strategies for revitalization, the research supports efforts to preserve cultural identity and maintain effective traditional leadership in the face of modern pressures.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to examining the decline of traditional chieftaincy institutions in Benin City, Oredo Local Government Area.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Chieftaincy Institutions: Traditional leadership systems with cultural and administrative roles.
  • Modern Governance: Contemporary political and administrative systems.
  • Cultural Heritage: The legacy of cultural values and practices passed down through generations.
