Background of the Study
Traditional chieftaincy institutions have historically played a crucial role in governance, conflict resolution, and cultural preservation in Nigerian societies. In Benin City, these institutions are witnessing a decline influenced by modern political structures, urbanization, and evolving social norms (Igbinedion, 2023). As contemporary governance systems gain prominence, the authority and influence of traditional chiefs are increasingly questioned. This shift is compounded by economic changes and generational differences that favor modern administrative practices over customary leadership (Osagie, 2024). The erosion of traditional chieftaincy undermines cultural identity and disrupts community cohesion. Recent studies have highlighted the need to re-examine the relevance and adaptation of chieftaincy systems in a modern context (Udo, 2025). This study investigates the factors contributing to the decline of traditional chieftaincy in Oredo, seeking to document the challenges and propose strategies for preserving this cultural institution.
Statement of the Problem
Traditional chieftaincy institutions in Benin City are declining due to modern political, social, and economic pressures (Igbinedion, 2023). The diminished influence of traditional leaders has led to a loss of cultural identity and weakened community governance (Osagie, 2024). Despite their historical importance, there is limited research on the specific factors accelerating this decline. This study aims to investigate the causes of the erosion of chieftaincy institutions and to propose measures that might revitalize traditional leadership roles (Udo, 2025). Addressing this issue is essential for preserving cultural heritage and sustaining community unity.
